Wellbeing

We take the wellbeing of our children very seriously. We know that children flourish academically, socially and spiritually when they feel safe, valued and understood. Supporting wellbeing is not an “add on” — it is woven into the fabric of everyday school life.

From the way we greet one another each morning, to the relationships we build in classrooms and on the playground, we prioritise emotional safety, positive connections and a strong sense of belonging. Our staff model empathy, patience and encouragement, helping children to develop the language and confidence to express their thoughts and feelings.

Alongside this daily commitment, we also dedicate special time throughout the year to focus intentionally on this vital aspect of development. Each term, we hold a Wellbeing Wednesday — a day for the whole school community to pause, reflect and strengthen the strategies that help us thrive.

During Wellbeing Wednesday, children revisit and refine their own individual “toolkit” of regulation strategies. They might explore breathing techniques, mindfulness activities, movement breaks, creative expression, journaling or quiet reflection. Classes take part in guided relaxation and shared discussions, helping children understand how to recognise their emotions and respond to them in healthy, constructive ways.

Each Wellbeing Wednesday is built around a meaningful theme. At Harvest time, we focus on gratitude — recognising and giving thanks for what we have. In the lead-up to Christmas, we explore how to spread joy, kindness and compassion within our community. At other points in the year, we reflect on belonging, helping children understand that they are valued members of our school family, and we nurture self-belief, encouraging them to recognise their strengths and potential.

These themed days deepen children’s understanding of themselves and others. They create space for important conversations, strengthen friendships and remind us all that wellbeing matters — every single day.

Rooted in our Christian vision and guided by our values of Respect, Compassion, Perseverance, Joy, Wisdom and Courage, we aim to equip our children not only with academic knowledge, but with the emotional resilience and inner confidence to navigate life’s challenges.

At Urchfont, wellbeing is about more than feeling happy.

It is about feeling secure.

It is about knowing you belong.

It is about believing you can flourish.
